How to play

  1. I have picked a secret word with five letters.
  2. Type a word and press Enter. I will tell you how close you are.
  3. Each letter gets one of three answers, shown by color, shape, symbol and words:
    • Right spot (check mark): the letter is in the word and in this place.
    • Wrong spot (arrows): the letter is in the word, but in a different place.
    • Not in word (cross): the letter is not in the word.
  4. Words that are not real, or not five letters, are not counted. Just try again.
  5. You can ask for hints, take back your last guess once, or give up and see the word.
  6. There is no timer. Your game is saved if you leave.

Keyboard: Tab moves between buttons. Arrow keys move around your past guesses. Esc closes this window.

Playing by voice

Press Start talking, then speak. You can say a word, spell it (C R A N E), ask for a hint, take back a guess, ask how many words fit, change the colors or text size, and more. Say "what can I say" to hear all the commands, or type them in the box.

Voice works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. The browser's speech service may send your voice to the browser maker. Nothing is saved by this game.
